India’s Olympic Journey before Rio Olympics

India is second most populated country in this world but has no big medal tally at Olympics to show. Out of 27 Olympics games held till date, India has participated in 26 Olympics games and have won just 26 medals. Let us see who were the star performers for India and in which sports India excelled at Olympics.

*Total Medal – 26 ( 9 Gold, 6 Silver, 11 Bronze) ( Out of 26 medals 11 belong to Hockey)

*Total Gold Medal – 9 ( Out of 9 Gold medals, 8 have been won in Hockey )

*Individual Gold Medal – 1 ( Abhinav Bindra in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting at Beijing 2008 Olympics)

*Maximum Medals in Team Event for India ( Hockey 11, Shooting 4, Wrestling 4)

*Most Medals were won at London 2012 Olympics – 6 ( 2 Silver, 4 Bronze)

*Individuals who have won more than one medal for India at Olympics – ( Norman Pritchard 2 Silver, Sushil Kumar 1 silver, 1 bronze )

*India won 8 gold medals in total in Hockey which includes an incredible run from 1928–1956 giving India 6 consecutive Gold Medals in Hockey.

*One less known fact is that in 1956 Olympics, Indian Football Team reached till the Semifinal stage. They beat host Australia 4-2 in Quarterfinals which is considered as one of the finest achievement of Indian Football Team but sadly India couldn’t build on it.

*Independent India’s first individual medal came at 1952 Olympics when Khashaba Jadhav won Bronze Medal in Wrestling. India didn’t won individual medal for next 44 years, this Individual medal drought was ended by Leander Paes when he won Bronze Medal in Tennis in 1996 at Atlanta Olympics.

*At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, weightlifter Karnam Malleswari marked her place in Indian sports history by becoming India’s first woman to win an Olympic medal. She lifted 110 kg in the “snatch” and 130 kg in the “clean and jerk” for a total of 240 kg, she took the bronze medal after that Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal won Bronze medal at London Olympics.
